Question:

Spatter, I unmunged your address as best as I could and am BCC’ing this reply direct as well as posting it. discontinued the dosage but still ended up losing it. The ER folks thought she was a druggie (which neither of us are) and said no doctor would prescribe a dose higher than 30mg per day.

The ER folks didn’t know what they were talking about. I take 60mg per day and would probably be higher, but I was having anxiety side-effects (I have a big anxiety problem, too) and we left it at 60. I might still benefit from a higher dose. What matters is what YOU need. You might look up Adderall at <http://www.rxlist.com or one of the other medicine reference sites and see if it says what the appropriate dosage per body weight is. Not to be insulting, personal or prying, but are you a big, heavy guy (I am, too, so I can get away with asking–I think <grin)? If so, your body weight would indicate a higher dosage is needed. I read in here about people getting the beneficial effects from a 25mg/day dosage…does this mean that something is whacked with my neurochemistry?

Again, it’s not what other people are taking but what YOU need. I have NEVER felt a "rush" or speedy effect from adderall — no euphoria or other common effects related to stimulants. It is as if I am taking nothing at all, except that I am able to concentrate, hold a conversation and follow through on task completion at my job (provided my dose is high enough). I get a scrip for 240×30mg adderall once a month, and it seems to work well enough. SO my question is….should I get a third opinion on my meds, or is there no harm in taking as much as I have been. Once I hit the 120-150mg mark, my dosing has leveled off and I no longer need to keep increasing it (this has been for months now). What do you guys think?

If you would feel more comfortable with an additional medical opinion, I’d say go for it. As for me, I’m not a doctor–I don’t even play one on TV, but FWIW, if that level is working for you, sounds to me like that’s what you need. Hi , I myself take 180 mgs day with no side effects which is ok as long as you do not have a heart problem I don’t think you such go to another doctor because he may use the pdr as a bible and freak out at the dose you take. As to being addicts all you can do with those who are not very well informed or  have a narrow presepction on thinking can make that kind of judgment such not be taken in by .Its happened to me also a number of times when I seeked other med problems with the health care systems. Do you own thinking don’t get catch up it to what they believe otherwise you will be what they say you are . They just love to control people in the end …. for the rest of you – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Greetings. I will try to keep this short and to the point (since I have a tendancy to ramble at best): I am in the 20-30something age group — married with 4 children and a good job. The smartest move I have ever made was seeking treatment for the ADD that had plagued me since early childhood. My doctor initially prescribed ritalin, which worked like a charm. However, the crash and side effects became so bad I sought an alternative. After a few months of monkeying around with different ritalin dosages, and switching between the SR and regulars , I got a script for adderall. I was told to start with 5mg 2x a day and increase until a satisfactory level was reached – to a max of 40mg. I settled into a dose of 2×20mg, which worked well for about 6 weeks. After the 6 weeks, the adderall seemed to be wearing off faster and faster. Mind you, I did not have any ill effects like I did with ritalin — no sleeplessness, weight loss or nervousness. My doctor told me to increase my dosage to a point where the effectiveness resumed. My daily intake rose to where I was taking roughly 80 – 100 mg a day (20 x 4/5 times daily). When I hit the 100mg/day dose, I became concerned about any potential ill effects like dependency or ??? and sought the services of a professional psychiatrist (who was highly referred to me by many as an expert in the treatment of ADD). He did not seem concerned at my increased dosage since I was not (and still am not) having any side effects. He told me to self regulate up to a point of 180mg/daily..which works very well for me. On an average day, I take between 150 and 180mg as needed and I am able to keep a handle on my hectic life/career/children/etc. Buuuuut — here is the dark side part. My wife is also ADD (as is one of our children) and has been taking 50-60mg daily which has been helping her quite a bit. However, she started having some ill side effects about 3 days ago..which ended up sending her to the emergency room last night in a near catatonic state with convulsions. Once the side effects started in her, she discontinued the dosage but still ended up losing it. My pharmacist & doctor(Dr Harold Levinson) each called Shire Richwood( KY)the manuf. of Adderall & were informed that Adderall is potentially very  risky for those with Mitral Valve Prolapse as the Adderall had been associated with a significant increase in Cardiac Catecholamine stress hormones in some prolapse patients(I have that prolapse) -Marsha Lampert MBA MS

Thanks for the info. However, I did not mention that during my self-medicating phase — I consumed superhuman quantities of methamphatamine and/or cocaine — I do not notice any adverse cardiac reactions to adderall — not even an elevated pulse most of the time, so I wonder if somehow I’ve damaged my dopamine receptors or dulled them through years of chronic abuse (I’ve been clean for years now). Anyhow…I guess I will have to watch and see. Wow.  That’s a lot.  For adults, I would speculate (but I’m not a physician) that the possible effects on the vascular system are dangerous.  One should monitor blood pressure etc on such a high dose. I get racing heart on 20 mg. And I’m quite physically fit for a 40-something woman, who works out and eats low-fat diet.  Let’s face it, stims are vasoconstictors, and any constrictor limits the amount of blood reaching your tissues. It cannot be good.  Like smoking (nicotine is also a vasoconstrictor), too much may have a wide range of effects on the body. Please note I am not a physician, just an informed consumer who respects the complex synergy of the body.  But one who finds stims helpful and wants to minimize possible adverse effects:  the cost/benefit ratio, as they say.
